If you’re like many of the leaders I have spoken with recently, your calendar for the next 6 weeks is a bit lighter than usual. July and early August often bring a rare gift in leadership: fewer meetings, slower inbox traffic, and a bit of breathing room.
Several leaders I’ve spoken with have used this time for what I call administrative hygiene—clearing emails, organizing files, and tidying to-do lists. While there’s a certain satisfaction in tackling those lingering tasks, I’d argue this season also offers something even more valuable: a perfect time to take a step back, to assess progress made (or not) toward your long-term goals, and to refine your strategy for the second half of the year. Four specific approaches I recommend are:
- Rest and Reset – A lighter calendar is the perfect invitation to recharge. Even a few scattered days off can help you return with sharper focus and renewed energy. You may find that it is easier to unplug knowing that you’ll have less of an avalanche of work awaiting you when you return.
- Dive into Deep Work – Fewer interruptions mean more chances to tackle the strategic, brain-heavy work you rarely get to during the everyday chaos. Use this time to work on something that moves the needle.
- Cultivate Connections – Now’s the time to invest in relationships. A coffee chat without a time-sensitive agenda can build the kind of trust that pays off later—especially when you do find yourself under pressure. You can also use this time to reopen communication channels with those in your network you may not have spoken to in a while or to begin expanding your network.
- Plan Your Progress – Get crystal clear on what “success” looks like by year-end. Then reverse-engineer your calendar. Protect time for your priorities. Use this time to develop consistency. This progress will allow you to build momentum that will help you stay the course when the busier fourth quarter of the year arrives.
Summer can be a launchpad. Whether you use this ‘quieter’ season to reset your energy, deepen your focus, reconnect with others, or sharpen your goals, these small, intentional moves can create powerful momentum. Midyear is a natural reflection point—take advantage of it. What’s one strategic move you can make now that your future self will thank you for?
